Let the buying frenzy begin!

By now, we've all received at least 3 nursery catalogs in the mail. Does anything jump out at you as a 'totally must have this'?

For me, it's Hosta 'Anne', Hosta 'Lipstick Blonde' and the hardy geranium 'Crystal Lake'. Of course, with k vanBourgondien having a 20% off sale through 01-Jan, you know these are as good as planted!

How about you?

Also, I'm thinking maybe we ought to start thinking semi-seriously about bulk purchases of things such as caladium before they start to sell out.

I am totally into edibles right now. I have ordered and received from Pinetree Garden Seeds, and Baker Creek. Pinetree is an old fave of mine, smaller packets less pricey than some works for me as I am such a small grower. One fee up to 25$. Baker Creek has amazing interesting unusual things with shipping included per packet, and lots of buyer reviews to help you evaluate. What did I buy? No idea.. lolol.. Several leafy greens, trying to better utilize spring/fall growing season.
An unusual small melon. Summer squash and row cover to keep borers off.
Plant it and they will come.

I'd love to grow some leafy greens, but I don't think row covers would be much of a deterrent to the growing deer population.

I don't know, if they don't see it they might not realize... but if might smell it and the row cover would be shredded.. deer and gardening Thumbs down

I looked in my seed box and played a round of Grow it or Throw it- 10 yr old weird seed ...
Plant it and they will come.

I've been doing an annual purchase of specialty snowdrops from Carolyn's Shade Gardens. This is the fourth year. They are really pricey, so it is a splurge. I just purchased two more - Beatrix Stanley and Greenish.

Wow! Pricey doesn't begin to cover it. $85 for a single plant... and it's sold out! Ok, it's a nice looking flower, but unless that sucker multiplies like rabbits or deer...

She sells out fast. Most are gone within days of her order release date. There aren't many suppliers of snowdrops is the US. I've been trying to stick with the ones that are in the $20 - $30 dollar range vs the ones that get upwards of $85 LOL. Still pricey though for a single plant but every one that I've purchased from her has survived and all are multiplying each year. Call me crazy, but I love collecting them Green Grin!

I received my Michigan Bulb catalog yesterday. It seems that they miss me (or more accurately, by bank account!) The catalog has a 50% off coupon attached good through 31-Jan-20. No limits on how much I can buy.

Sooooooo..... have a look at their site and if there's anything you want, let me know. I'll be ordering no later than the 28th.

We will make arrangements for pick up at my place once the order ships in the spring.

Does anyone have any experience with Convallaria majalis rosea (Pink Lily of the Valley)? I used to have some, but the squirrels kept digging them up.

I was wondering how fast they spread. I have a lot of the plain white. They spread quite readily through the mulched paths. (As with the pachysandra, it's a 2-3 times a year effort to keep it in check.)
