Even after the cold I am seeing sulphurs, queens, and skippers too. I am just glad we are having a super cold break.

So far this winter is looking like it's gonna be worse than the previous ones. A light freeze tonight. Then our weather man was hinting using the term super freeze for next weekend. It is not even January yet. I checked and most my plants can handle down to 20 degrees. I just have to watch for frost nights so the plants stay attractive the next few months.

I need some info for porterweeds. Christmas was 25f to 29f for six hours. This morning it was freezing for about ten hours from 27f to 30f. My fuschia porterweed had big time punishment from the freeze. Most of the stems and the branches outer shell were split open. This is a large plant so i didnt want to try cutting it totally back. Will this plant regrow the outer shell? I do not know of its still alive. There were a few spots where there was ice inbetween the split skin.

They are Hardy to zone 9 it should be fine. Its possible to add some hay or dried leaves around the plant for extra protection against frost. Then in spring when temps are warmer cut the dead areas away. Usually the roots will survive sending up new shoots in spring.

Thank you:) I don't have any photos for 2021 yet. The ones I posted are from 2020 (I'm just late to the party Big Grin ) You can be certain I'll be posting for 2021 once my season starts. :)

@SassyBloomer; it's ok to post your 2020 pics on the 2021 thread. We all understand you can't take pics of butterflies right now. I'm posting mine from 2020. That BST is so huge, I'm wondering if it isn't a dark phase female tiger swallowtail. I had one of these in my yard, posted the pic, and one of our butterfly experts told me that's what it was. They are much bigger than BSTs and the markings are slightly different. Here's mine; a dark phase female Tiger swallowtail .
