DaisyI said:Lin, I don't mind having my photos in the DB - I put them there myself (I just checked, 89 of my photos are in the DB). I object to someone else making that decision for me.

To be certain that another member doesn't inadvertently move one of your pictures from a forum thread to the database, you should change your preferences to deny it. I think preferences automatically say yes, unless you manually change it to no; then if someone tries to move one of your photos to the database, it won't allow it to happen and they will get the message saying so.

When I was a new member I happened to be looking for something (don't remember what), I came across a picture that I had posted in our database. Quite a surprise! So I mentioned it here and someone explained to me how things work.

I didn't know that a picture I might post in a forum could end up on the internet. So now I do.

I saw another one a few days ago. This is one I want to track down (if possible) because it has my first name right above the watermark from here. Seems odd. Mostly curious as I don't remember ever using my real name. I might have posted the picture on Facebook years ago, but if it came from Facebook it wouldn't have the watermark from NGA. Or would it?

If it came from Facebook and then was posted here it would acquire the watermark while it got posted here.

Anything you post on places like Facebook, Instagram or any other websites that are generally open to the public tends to become part of the public domain, unless you put restrictions in place for that, which some sites allow, but if your facebook account is generally visible to most of Facebook you might as well expect that just about everyone can see what you post. Can be perfectly OK, as long as you are aware of that.

I understand about Facebook (kinda) but it seems like Facebook would have my first and last name attached to the picture. Mostly curious. Who knows what else is out there? Nothing very interesting, I'm sure.

I think its fun when one of my 'first ever' orchid photos is the only one coming up on the internet when I Google the name.

One of my solar eclipse photos is being used by a member of NGA as his/her Avatar. There was a sandbox forum of eclipse photos (I added a couple of mine) and, apparently, this person liked mine the best? Hmmm.... That's another discussion... I would never use someone else's photo for my Avatar.

The conversation about using other member's photos for other purposes did come up somewhere and Admin said they (he) had changed things so you couldn't copy a photo. So, being the renegade I am, I copied a photo for personal use. It wasn't hard. Rolling on the floor laughing

@Daisyl, have you contacted the member here at NGA who is using your photo without authorization and asked them to take it down?

I am not savvy enough to know how to copy someone else's photo for personal use but I would never, ever consider doing so, even if I did have the technical knowledge.

I recently noticed two instances of a neighbor posting on Facebook, where she used scenic photos from elsewhere, posting her lovely thoughts along with the beautiful photos. One of her friends even commented about her gorgeous beach/sunrise photo, which I knew wasn't hers because I'd seen it earlier from another source. She thanked her friend but never mentioned that it was not her photo. Blinking

Can you be sure the photo wasn't your neighbors and that she had posted it elsewhere before she did on NGA and that when you saw it earlier from another source that the source was actually using your neighbors' photo? I know I tend to overthink the possibilities but...... Big Grin .

I for one, like to personally apologize to @Gull, for having my actions inadvertently result in their thread being hijacked into something that belongs to the site talk forum, rather than here, since it ended up being nothing cactus related.... Sighing!

My neighbor didn't post the photos on NGA, she posted them on her Facebook page. I knew that the photos she used weren't hers because I'd seen them earlier on a local newspaper's facebook page; the newspaper article credited the photographer and it wasn't my neighbor. Smiling

@Gull, oops ... sorry for hijacking the thread. I'm old and I do tend to get off subject at times. *Blush*

At least the cactus ID was determined before all this came up some if anyone just wants to see the cactus pictures and ID discussion that shows up first... It is not like the cactus has not been ID'd yet and anyone would have to start looking in between the picture hijacking posts for anything useful pertaining to the Cactus ID... but yet this probably has enough posts not to merit its own thread... ;)

Ive opened a topic at the site talk forum.
The thread "Picture controversy" in Site Talk forum
A lot more people can see it there, so if any of you feel like adding something , voicing your opinion or reaching a consensus, that is the appropriate place.

Moved to Plant ID forum.
FYI, if you propose to import someone else's photo to the database, you both get 1/2 an acorn each. Not sure how many for a first photo.
Often a new member asking for an ID does not return again to become a continuing member throughout the site. If they posted a particularity nice photo, I often go back much later and import it. No need to bother them or trigger an new email.
If it's an ongoing member, I'll post asking them to please consider adding the photos or if they wouldn't mind, I can do it for them.
Stefan, you did fine and this thread helps a lot of members with additional info, from all sides, even though it's not related to the ID of the original post. nodding

For what it's worth, I was the one who requested this thread be moved to the cactus forum, and that's where it was found by the people who successfully identified the plant, though I have no problem with it being returned to the Plant ID forum afterwards. Smiling
