This gorgeous flowering shrub was growing in a yard on Anna Maria Island FL where we spent the long weekend. The flowers are huge, I had originally thought it might be a Mussaenda but I don't think it is. The plant was pruned into a shrubby single small tree/shrub about 5 feet tall and just covered with these flowers

It does look a lot like Justicia carnea but the leaves are wrong....these leaves are smooth edged and more succulent looking not like the leaves on that. I wish I had had the nerve to knock on the door and ask but if it was a rental the people would not have known anyway

I could be wrong but somehow the flower petals look like they have ragged edges, like as if they are made out of cloth? Smiling

There were multiple flowers on this shrub in various stages of bloom. It is a real flower, but I admit, it looks kind of weird!

Hmmmm......I wonder if it was starting to lose all the blooms so they bought some silk ones and stuck them in among the real ones?

I know I've seen those blooms before in South Florida and also on the west coast when we used to vacation in the Longboat Key and Bradenton/Anna Maria Island area but for the life of me, I can't remember the name. I'm sure someone will be along soon and reveal it's true identity!

Yeah this is Anna Maria. You see so many things that you don't know what they are. But 9 times out of 10 the house is being occupied by renters who can't ID it either Glare

I agree with Frostweed; the flower looks to be made of cloth.

I'm thinking that with all of those berries any real flowers are long gone.

Once I enlarged the picture and got a better look, I think Frostweed nailed it. The berries don't look alike either. Did you see any other shrubs like it while you were on the island?

Very clever........but the weave of the material and frayed edges can be clearly seen

No this was the only one. I was standing well away (this was on a bush up against the house) and kind of enlarging the screen on my phone to het a larger photo....which is why I did not get one of the whole thing I guess I thought I had what I wanted to get a possible ID. Well I am bummed. I guess it was just too pretty to be true...but I am wondering if the REAL blooms on this are the same thing.

It has berries so, likely the real flowers are smaller....and tend to be white...
