Me thinks I have blooms forming on my Etlingera 'Burgundy Tulip' Torch ginger. I started this last November a year ago from a single rhizome. Its about 8 ft tall now. Beautiful blood red leaf undersides and stems

No...I have all my torches inside. This is a tulip torch. I have the regular huge growing Pink Torch and Red Torch as well. Those are more like 12 feet tall LOL. I had these years ago, I took them out and sold the rhizomes off while I still had my nursery license. This is an old photo of my red torch. I'll have it back again soon!

Beautiful, I've not seen anyone grow them here or at the Leu gardens, that I've noticed anyway. I fell in love with them down in Naples, but afraid they wouldn't take the cold here.

I think they are pretty sensitive. My last crop of plants got HUGE. The plants were over 12 feet tall. They are like Heliconia and Alpinia purpurata....they will grow in a very large tub, but they want to be pampered. I decided a long while ago after planting ALpinia purpurata out in the greenhouse that it would NEVER be able to be contained if you gave it free space. It is a tight clumper, as is Etlingera, but being rhizomatous plants, they have the natural desire to spread outward. You can control that in a big tub garden, but once they are unground, its all over....

I must not have posted a photo here, but this plant made a terminal stem bloom last season. It was the weirdest thing. I have never heard of Etlingera doing that. I asked Tim Chapman and he said it was rare but sometimes it does happen, the plant gets confused for some reason.

This is a tulip torch, considered the 'dwarf' of the Etlingeras, my big elatiors have gotten to be about 12 feet tall. No blooms yet but I think they will this summer

You should try one. The 'tulip torches' stay smaller, about 8-10 feet as opposed to 12-15 ft and diameter of canes is smaller, as are blooms. This is the full size elatior, Red Torch. I also have the full size Pink Torch. And the tulip. My white tulip failed to establish, I may try again now that the weather is warmer

If I were still at my old house I would but I don't have the room for something that size here. Sometimes I miss not have more space and other times I relish not have the responsibility that more space requires. Whistling (ps, I am getting lazy as I age.)

This is the beginnings of a bloom on one of the big Etlingeria elatior 'Red Torch' gingers. The canes are over 12 feet tall, this bloom is about 4 ft tall. Its interesting to watch them progress from this to the final product
