These comparison photos are so helpful. You can see where even though some of the pairs of irises are similar in color, but differ in size and form. |

I really like this thread so I just started a thread in the Site Talk forum because I think it would be useful if there were a way to search fine comparison photos such as Valeria's: We have Plant Combination photos, but I was uncertain if that database area would be suitable or not for that: The thread "Include comparison photos between similar plants in the database?" in Site Talk forum |

William, Including pictures of comparable irises in the database would be extremely helpful. Great idea. |

It would take a bunch of programming to set up comparison sections in each plant database. And there will be a bunch of debate about what traits you are comparing and the definitions of similar. Example: Yes, Peggy Anne and Silver Streak are similar broken colored iris in the same color range. But I do not find all of the other example pictures above to be that closely similar. Especially ones with different colored standards but similar fall patterns. So how would that be handled in a comparison database? Would you have to set up a comparison area for each iris, i.e. those that look like Peggy Anne, those that look like Wintry Sky, etc.? How would you search it, especially if you have one like Peggy Anne that isn't already listed as similar? Would many people use such a database? Do we actively grow iris that look like others we already have? "The chimera is a one time happenstance event where the plant has a senior moment and forgets what it is doing." - Paul Black |

I love seeing the photo comparisons, and phenotypic similarities as far as bloom goes. I've enjoyed this thread very much. As a forum member who grows many hundreds of TB's, including nearly all of the ones pictured, I find that similarity in bloom color/pattern between different cultivars is where alot of the similitude ends. There could be/and are, significant differences in growth habit, flower form, bud count, hardiness, branching, vigor, disease resistance. Also, even small differences in color/pattern, can be appreciated and enjoyed, if they were intentionally planted together, (or unintentionally) like i do frequently. If anything, this thread and its photo comparisons should be an instructive visual tutorial in regards to hybridizers selecting and choosing seedlings for introduction, especially introducing into crowded color schemes and pattern classes -- i.e, whites, blues/lavenders, cream/yellow "Debby Rairdon" types, amoenas, and reverse blue bitones, and purples, purple plics .... For example, this seedling of mine -- Wintery Sky X Cherished Friendship 38" high, 2 branches plus spur, 7- 9 buds, sometimes 10, great substance, flower form, and growth habit. But it'll never be introduced........ why? ![]() ![]() ...... Too similar to many others in this color class, PLUS, this seedling literally blooms with the SDB's!!! making it a poor choice for anyone, but the south and desert southwest locales. However its many good traits will be used to create other seedlings, different from this one hopefully with some unique traits, colors, form, etc. |

Do we actively grow iris that look like others we already have? If you search the database for a plant, you already get all of the Plant Combination photos that have that plant tagged. So everything to do this is actually already in place. It is more a question if Plant Combinations are the best place for these kind of comparison photos or not. Maybe there needs to be a separate section, but the same code could still be reused, with very little modification. ![]() Let's say I search for 'Absolute Treasure' and then I can immediately see all other irises it has been compared to. Sometimes the comparison photos will show great similarities between the flowers, sometimes they will be more different. Both are good to know for selecting. There is no need at all to set up a separate section for Peggy Anne, Wintry Sky or anything else. I think a lot of us replace older iris with newer, but similar cultivars, so I think there is a window of opportunity to take comparison photos while you still grow both cultivars. |

![]() ![]() I noticed that you have some Australian irises from a nursery that doesn't export. Where did you buy Diamond Necklace from? A couple of people in Europe have asked me how to buy Grosvenor/Taylor irises and I thought it wasn't possible. I think "Plant combinations" could be used to link photos of similar irises to the iris database. It wouldn't matter if they are similar or not. |

Totally_Amazing said: "Diamond necklace." We bought it from one of our regular domestic suppliers. How he bought it, I don't know. Pictures taken with Iris, which is 1 year old. The flower was very large. This year we are likely to see a full-fledged flower stalk. ![]() |
