I am curious what the understock might be that was used for a polyantha that I believe is in the Koster family of polyantha's. It has nine leaflets.

Do you remember from where you bought it?

I didn't buy it. It's in the public garden where I volunteer. Unfortunately, there's no one formerly involved that I can ask, and the notes and schematic map isn't helpful. This actually looks a little bit different than the suckers I got rid of last year which looked more rugosa-like.

It's a form or hybrid of multiflora, the stipules are very multiflora. I doubt you'll find a specific name for it. It may have been a nurseries result from OP that was then used as understock.

Look at Poynton's multiflora on HMF, another multiflora understock with with a lot unusual characteristics.

Anyone with oryzalin (aka Surflan, Embargo), am looking for a small amount rather than 5litres from manufacturer (min size in Australia....)

Thank you, Protoavis! The description on HMF sounds exactly like what I saw last year, or something very similar. What does OP stand for? Thank You!

Open Pollination, not a controlled cross.

Randomly, just as an example. A self seedling from the polyantha Baby Faurax. Baby Faurax typically has 5 leaflets. Veilchenblau, Baby Fauraxs alledged parent (or rather sport of) typically has 7 leaflets. As you can see below 9 leaflets and so far the seedling looks very very much multiflora as do many of its siblings.
