A fellow member on another forum (North American Rock Gardein Society) has asked about the culture of Lankon. I can't think of a better place then here to get her answer, since many of you posted such nice pics of your own.

Judging from all your successes, it doesn't seem to picky. What hints do you all have for her? She is lives in Australia.

I had no problems in my area - (Arcata, CA) Planted in plastic container, foggy morning, afternoon sun.

Andrew, apparently it is available through a catalog she received there. She lives somewhere in Victoria.

Michael, she can interpolate some temperature and sun tolerance from you info, thanks. can you be at all specific about the soil medium? Remember she is in Australia and won't have the same brands of mixes that we do in the US. (It's like when the British say they plant in John Innes #2: what the heck is that?)

I had no idea what conditions Lankon required, so I planted it at the sunniest end of my shady martagon bed. It grew to nearly 3' with 2 blooms.

I just use whatever potting soil is on sale (Mostly ACE). It has no fertilizer in the mix, I add some bonemeal at time of potting, and add more pertile for good drainage. Water twice a week, and I will again after it blooms give it more fertilizer 10-10-10 (balance or more bonemeal). I live in the city so the animals normally do not dig up the plants because of the bonemeal.

Today I unearthed single pots of Lankon purchased last July for the 1st time in Australia...I ended up buying 23 bulbs last year and sold 17 potted...A lot of you may recall the nice dark ones I listed pics of ... {still got em]....I could not believe the vigour and growth of the bulbs I saw today .. Each single bulb had divided into 3, with an active stem ,already 4 inches long.. each cluster of old stem roots had 3 basal bulbils present...As I grow all my stock in pots, I made sure to select a much larger pot, this time, to accommodate future growth..This lily for me really gets the

Say, Anthony--It would be interesting to know if all those divisions and offsets yield precisely the same flower. I've heard that even in cloning, there may be produced a variety of flower patterns. I've also heard that it's somewhat of a chimera, too, with somewhat different color pattern flowers on the same plant. Humm--is there such thing as a stable chimera? I guess so..... or, maybe I should ask: is Lankon an unstable hybrid?

I ordered 3 Lankon bulbs from Faraway Flowers, hoping that I just might get a mix of light and dark forms.
They are all the light form - I'm certainly not complaining, though!

I am guessing this is when cloned in vitro, rather than by traditional division or scaling?

Of course there can be. A good example is the Sanseveria with the yellow edged leaves.

Some 'scale and grow' people for retail markets are already reporting pattern and color variation. If that is true, then natural division in a garden would be expected to drift, would it not? I see a lot of variation in the photos on here already. Why do you suppose that is? There must be instability within this hybrid. What will successive offsets over a ten year period produce?

No known drift with Lankon; it is several different clones that are very similar and one of them is a darker form. It is being sold like it is a single clone though. At least that is my recollection when it first came out. It was also featured in a QB article.

I seen this on the net and thought I would ask if you can take Lankon to Lankon and produce seeds that way......... since it is a cross within species thought that this might work........
I have 10 of them that are growing great but I used a stem root helping soil and it seems to have done good for them. I also planted them in full sun.....
I see most of them are forming flower buds and will get about 3 per stem by the looks of it........
but just wandered whether scaling is better or can do this by seed??
they are a very sturdy plant as well...and fairly tall.......

I know the lily breeder told me that as far as he knows Lankon has not been crossed with anything successfully ...........

Pat you can not get seed on lankon by crossing it with another lankon because it is a clone. That means they are the same. Also I do believe it is sterile. It multiplies pretty good for me. It started as 2 bulbs 3 years ago and now has 11 flowering stems!

Mine is light colored but this is the first year it bloomed having been frost bit the first year. It has done extremely well here in the horrible heat we have been having since early May. It is one of the very few that did not burn and the blooms actually lasted 2 or more days in full sun and 100F. All types of lilies are fried here, and it looks like many orientals have completely died.
