Welcome to The Porch Swing!

Everyone is welcome to join us on the Porch Swing a thread where we talk about cooking, books, pets, birthdays, TV, the area where we live, anything that isn't on topic for the regular daylily threads. The subject on the Porch Swingis always changing.

Don't worry about reading all of the thread, just jump right in. We're sure you'll enjoy visiting with us.

We have many threads covering a wide variety of information on the topic of Daylilies. The Daylily Forum has two threads for off topic discussion - Weather In Your Garden for weather related chat and The Porch Swing for all non-daylily messages and chat.

When a new Porch Swing thread is posted, the old Porch Swing threads will be left up for a few days, then periodically deleted, so be sure to copy any items out of the old thread that you want to keep when you see a new thread is up.

* All other off topic threads will be relocated to the appropriate Forum. If you inadvertently post an off topic thread to the forum, please let us know and we'll move it into its proper place, and if we see it before you do, we'll let you know by Tree-mail that we moved the thread.*

Hurray! Happy Spring everyone! Hurray!

Good morning, all daylily lovers.

This quarantine has driven me to daylily madness; I have been using different methods of stratifying and germinating an enormous amount of seeds. I am not counting the seeds for I fear that it will verify my madness.

Some have germinate and they are planted in groupings according to the cross. After a certain size, each will have her own container. At that point, they will go into a solar greenhouse until early June, when I will realize that I am truly mad since I have created too much work.

Yayyy spring Hurray!
40/25 and mostly cloudy today. We've locked the doors at work so I stay in my office and work. Everyone is dropping their taxes off or mail them in then we're mailing their signature pages with return envelopes.

I looked out the window and daffodils are blooming. Too cold to go out for pics.

I am in the same boat, Gerry. I am starting way too many seeds. It is keeping me sane, though. I may need all of the work involved in getting them planted in June, to keep me busy then. Who knows how long we will have to stay home and avoid social contact.

I am glad your workplace has enacted work protocols to keep you safe.

Zoom in and you can see the water is halfway up the nearest light pole.

Gerry,
I overdid it last year with all kinds of seeds. What's my excuse?

Valerie, I am a retired teacher, 40 years veteran.

My life is divided between two passions: gardening and sewing.
I am still sewing, and I have been gardening indoors.
All my pepper seeds have germinated, and daylily seeds are in many stages of stratification to germination.

I have been collecting a lot of data to write a paper next winter.

I am a functioning bipolar who needs to be kept entertained and feel productive to avoid deep depression. This is the first winter in a long time that I have not felt any depression. I know, TMI.

No, not at all too much information, Gerry.

I am glad you are keeping busy and productive. I think that is how we will get through this.

I have always worked from home, so have not had a hard time adjusting to staying home, although psychologically it feels different when one is told that one must do it, rather than it being a choice. I am so looking forward to the start of outdoor gardening. My passion is gardening, too, and I am looking forward to feeling the earth.

Not to worry Garry, this is the TMI thread. Rolling on the floor laughing
I too suffer from depression and have to say gardening is the best therapy I've ever tried, including medication. I don't know why it's so effective but it is. This hobby is great for every aspect of health.

Gerry if I am not mistaken you are the person who sometimes sell hostas, correct? I purchased some from you a few years back they are all doing well Looking forward to seeing them peak their noses out of the ground this year. Good to see you posting here while we all take a break from socializing. Welcome!

I too have a cocktail of psychological issues. Gardening pumps our blood, which in turn increases oxygen to the brain, which increases endorphins and seratonin, etc.. Smiling I was told by a doctor years ago that the best self-help a phycology patient can do is to exercise in some form or fashion. Thumbs up Thumbs up

I do find I get really grumpy when there's been several days in a row of great weather, but I haven't been outside in the gardens due to reasons out of my control. I get bottled up inside and sometimes lash out at Sparky. Crying Crying He's a patient man, though. Lovey dubby Lovey dubby Lovey dubby

Very impressive Thumbs up , my garden is full at the moment until things start to grow here and I can see if everything is growing. My main plants are daylilies along with other plants and a smaller number of hosta in my mostly sunny garden. Spring has not yet sprung here we are expecting snow next week.

Joining the club. It's not normal for me to be open about personal stuff in the forum, but I'm finding this particular situation a bit different so may pop in from time to time. Usually I just retreat into my own little corner and work things out for myself. It's not unusual for me to be home for several days, perfectly content. So today I am wobbling between a need to just go somewhere, anywhere and see some signs of normalcy and pure frustration at the situation we are in. It must be the psychological issue Valerie mentioned of being told we need... must do it.

Thanks for all the thumbs on the threads, I appreciate it! This morning I was simply hoping I did them right since I was having trouble focusing as I listened to the first news of the day while sipping the first of what will be several cups of coffee today.
I wanted to post a few things in a message after the thread starter post but got sidetracked by the typical morning routine....

Check out the "Want List" at the top of the forum. Maybe someone has listed a daylily they're looking for and now that plants are growing you realize you have a piece you could share. We can all use a bit of good news right now!

If you just need some time from the news and have been through all the recent thread comments, check out the images in the database. They run on the right hand side of the forum and you can access pages of them from the database link. If you feel like you need more brain activity and not just a distraction, add comments to the daylilies you grow or images to the database (all plants included). You can also skip back a few pages in the forum and read old threads, maybe comment and bump something up.

and please...wash those hands, keep your distance when in public, stay home as much as possible and stay safe. Group hug

It really will be nice to get into Spring.

Got one of those Robo Calls the Mayor's Office does. Used to be for Snow Storms. This time telling us Garbage Pickup will be reduced to once a week instead of the 2x per week until further notice. I don't have too much garbage so not a big deal for me. Well, I have more during gardening season but they are still going to pock up yard waste on Wednesdays as usual.

I'm trying to find a balance to being informed and not get sucked into anxiety inducing news — I haven't found it yet.

I did get out to do some weeding which was quite relaxing. Take that you weed! You think you're going to grow here? Think again!!

Trying to take joy in spring...
