I would like to save money and purchase one fork instead of two and use it for a second purpose. If you had to choose between buying a spading fork with 4 tines for collecting compost and also use it for collecting manure, or a 5-tine manure pitchfork and also use it for lifting compost which would you choose?

Five-tine manure fork.
I have a lot of forks and the five-tine is best.

Never buy a cheap stainless steel fork of any type as mine broke first time used, it was cast not forged.

I have three different forks: A large seed fork, a four tine spading fork and a five tine pitch fork. I don't find them very interchangeable. They each seem to have specific purposes. If I really just had to be able to pick just one I would consider the five tine pitch fork the most versatile. But it would not be very well suited for many of the jobs I do.

Both forks are said to be forged.

Is anyone as concerned as I am about the warnings that accompany some garden tools, household items and even shoes?

I have two favorites ~ a four tine spading fork with a D ring handle and a five tine pitch fork. I find both very useful for different applications. I agree with Seedfork

As this warning is on anything you chose to purchase, I tend to think it only applies to living in California. I am 70 years old and have been exposed to many things. No I don't lose sleep over such.

Me too because I have no plan to go there. I guess that means I won't get cancer. Right???

That is a warning like the little boy that cried wolf. It is on everything and we become innured to seeing it.
