This is a plant I bought at the USF Tampa Botanical Gardens one year. Labelled Hoya nicholsonaii. Snow white blooms. It has climbed up the wall, and the blooms are sequential up the wall. All are above my head.

Looking good Gina! I'm hoping to see blooms on the Wax Plant (Hoya verticillata) a/k/a Hoya nicholsoniae/nickolsoniae that I got from you last year, it currently has a peduncle and buds! The leaves on my plant are quite red and spotted from the amount of sun it gets:

What!? Hoya Pottsii and Hoya nicholsonaii are the same thing? I have a plant I bought as Hoya Pottsii "Khao Yai." So would that also be known as Nicholsonii "khao yai," or how does that work?

I was so dumbfounded that I forgot to add that your plant is spectacular, Gina! That double bloom is so pretty. And it kind of looks like little teeth, which I think is funny.

Adrienne, there's a cultivar named Wax Plant (Hoya verticillata 'Chiang Mai'), could that be the one you have?
edited to say: Never mind, I think H. pottsii 'Chiang Mai' is from Australia and there is apparently a Hoya (not pottsii) named 'Khao Yai' that is from Thailand.

Gina, I love the recurved flowers!

Yes, Lin, it is Thailand! I read that the name of the Thailand rainforest area/ national park it was found in is named 'Khao Yai' but I've also seen it called 'sp.22'

The peeps on FaceBook Hoya ID think mine is Hoya pottsii Chieng Mei. And since pottsii is a synonym of nicholsoniae that are probably right

Adrienne, Yes, Khao Yai is a National Park in Thailand. I've never heard of any plant species name, using a number. The Catalogue of Life has 39 pages of Hoya species but none with a species by the name of 22, or even spelled out twenty two. When researching the name, I couldn't find any scientific information regarding a Hoya species 22 which might be why we don't have a listing for it in the database here. Perhaps the exact species hasn't been decided yet. Shrug! 'Khao Yai' is the cultivar name.

I saw on Doug Chamberlains webpage (Vermont Hoyas) that he has one named Hoya sp. 22 ' Khao Yai'. I found a couple of sellers with a plant listed as Hoya sp. 22 Khao Yai. There are lots of photos on Pinterest and one ebay seller has one listed as Rare Hoya pottsii sp. Khao Yai but pottsii is a species which had me thinking perhaps it was a Hoya pottsii cultivar named Khao Yai. Blinking Plant names can be so confusing! Confused

Gina, thanks for letting me know that the one I got from you is Wax Plant (Hoya verticillata 'Chiang Mai') We currently don't have any bloom photos there so you should upload some. I will do the same when mine blooms.

OK let's add some more confusion.. I posted my photos to the Facebook Hoya ID group and they said...
When mine first came out it was sold as subquintulinervis. Then there was a move to cal it verticillata. Then pottsii 'Chieng met'. And Nicholsoniai was a sin of pottsii.

SO I still don;t actually know what I have. My flowers are snow white and lack a green coloration around the middle that would make it as nicholsoniai/pottsii

Gina, I agree, those pretty white blooms with white coronas don't look like those of Hoya pottsii, Wax Plant (Hoya subquintuplinervis) or (verticillata is one of many synonyms for H. acuta.) I grew H. acuta for awhile and the leaves seemed much narrower than those in your photo. The blooms of your Hoya pottsii pictured here, also show the difference from those in your most recent photo:

Wax Plant (Hoya cagayanensis) has similar blooms, maybe you can compare the leaves on your plant to this one :

I sure wish we still had a Hoya expert as an active member here. At one time we had at least 3 or 4 who were extremely knowledgeable about different Hoyas. Sighing!

I have a Hoya parasitica (which is also known as Acuta or verticillatica...I believe verticillatica is the final name that was deemed official) and I do see the similarities in the leaves, except parasitica is more heart shaped and the alleged Pottsii is more elongated. The flowers aren't solid white like yours, Gina. They have a green-ish hue, like you mentioned that yours don't have.

parasitica and verticillata are both shown as synonyms of

My H. acuta had very narrow leaves but the leaves of Wax Plant (Hoya verticillata 'Lao 2') are much broader.

Okay. Time for me to add to the confusion.😉 I purchased a hoya from Gardinos last year named H. Verticilliata formerly 'Chiang Mai.' Here's a photo. Too young for blooms yet.
