Thanks, Joshua. Time will tell, but to tell you the truth, I probably will ultimately simply sell the remaining four for for $20 and call it a day. I have hundreds of orchids that love the climate, so those are what I care (more) about. drdawg (Ken Ramsey) - Tropical Plants & More http://www.tropicalplantsandmo... I don't have gray hair, I have wisdom-highlights. I must be very wise. |
I've now had a chance to take photos of my Cym. erythraeum var. erythraeum f. album. It's flowering early (about 6 to 8 weeks early!), no doubt due to our crazy Melbourne weather and the weird microclimates around our house (one of my lowianums is spiking and it is way more advanced than it should be at this time of year). This seedling is a selfing of 'Lois', which is one of the few alba forms of the Indian variety that I know of in the country (owned by a fellow Victorian grower and Cym. species enthusiast). Barrita Orchids in NSW must have ended up with a flask of the seedlings, as that is where mine came from (bought it about a year ago). This is its first flowering; in future, as it matures (and if I can give it more light), I would expect around 13 to 15 flowers on the spike (it has 8 this time). It is scented, though not as strongly as its Chinese relative, Cym. erythraeum var. flavum (nor the seedlings I have which are the cross of the two varieties). It also has a very low-arching spike, as opposed to var. flavum, which has a high-arching spike. I am already scheming about the crosses I want to make using this beautiful species! Oh man! You are so lucky that some one put that beautiful fence up so you could hang your beautiful Cymbidiums from it!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The key to orchid growing is to match the orchid to your conditions. |

Such unique and stunning flowers Joshua. ![]() ![]() ![]() Minds are like parachutes; they work better when they are open. |
Ha ha, Bill! I just used the new(ish) fence between me and my neighbours as a clean backdrop for most of the photos. Bit easier to see the flowers against it than against the vegetable garden or my messy carport! Joshua those are really cool! My supermarket (Lowes dead rack rescue) Phals are finally putting forth a decent effort![]() ![]() I am not over-enamored of Phals for the most part unless they are really neat, like my variegated ones ![]() but for the fact that they usually bloom pretty easily Award winning beaded art at ceinwin.deviantart.com! |

Love that, Joshua. Did anybody else see the dragon's head in the lip there? Elaine "Success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm." –Winston Churchill |

Oh Elaine, fantastic with that Dragons Head!! This social distancing has certainly fined tuned your powers of observation! I love it!! The key to orchid growing is to match the orchid to your conditions. |

I think it's the child care that has honed my imagination, probably. Dragons and unicorns are rather popular beasties around this house. Elaine "Success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm." –Winston Churchill |
