The smoke is here and the smell has made it into my house too. I have asthma so it makes for a difficult breathing day, no going outside until it clears up. I knew it was coming so I picked all my vegetables that were ready yesterday and processed them this morning. It is a good thing I got them done this morning because any activity at all now makes me pretty breathless. It is suppose to blow out of here by this evening, although it hasn't started going yet, so I hope the forecasters are right and it does.

The smoke didn't go anywhere and is suppose to get worse tomorrow and Sunday. My seedling daylilies are blooming so I put my respirator on and covered all up and went through really quick. It didn't do my breathing much good but it sure lifted my spirits to see the pretty new ones. Lovey dubby Lovey dubby The smoke could stay for a lot of the summer so I hate to miss all the flowers that I've waited a couple of years to see.

Ugh - I'm so sorry for all of you that are dealing with that smoke! They keep saying that it's affecting the UP, but other than a couple of days where the sky looked kind of hazy (and may have, in fact, just been "hazy") we haven't noticed it. Also feeling very sad for anyone that has been more directly affected by the fires Crying

Fortunately smoke does not bother me, except some times when I go to be it gives me a headache but I get those so often from other bad habits it is part of life -- (the annoying thing is they come on an hour or so before sunrise and often if I just get my butt out of bed they go away, but I have gotten too darn lazy)

I did see some today but I am used to it so I do not notice it.

Odd thing, when mowing lawn I thought I saw a big toad, and it turned out to be some sort of frog by the hostas.
No idea where he came from or how he got there.

We were predicted to have a pretty much all-day rain, so I was surprised to wake up to sunshine... now there's only a mediocre chance for this evening. Thought I might have a day off today (or at least a day to get some things done indoors); now I think I'll dig up my garlic and get that area ready to plant my broccoli and cauliflower seedlings. Smiling

weedwacker, i noticed you indicated pulling your garlic, earlier in the season i had trouble with what i thought was onion maggot, but it may have been leek moth, anyway i received some advice on this forum, I just pulled my garlic last week and had an amazing crop, tomatoes are just ripining on the vine and the basil in the greenhouse is beautiful....what a combo...heirloom tomoatoes, garlic and basil add a little olive oil and pasta and its always a hit!

Tom Hurray!

My garlic is coming out tomorrow - I'm really looking forward to seeing what it looks like, our snow was gone so much earlier than usual and I was kind of wondering whether the garlic would be "finished" much earlier than usual, but it's right on schedule. The suspense is killing me Big Grin

In one of those anomalies, it is 4 degrees warmer up North down home and high is forecast for two degrees higher.

It is 86 and sunny right now with a very mild breeze; I would be down home already but I forgot today was GSharon's Birthday , SO, by the Grace of God, a site online wishing her a happed hery Birthday alerted me. (We kinda-sorta celebrated
her birthday this weekend at a Casino, but as she did not win, it would be Hellfire had I forgotten about today.

Supposedly we will get rain on Friday, but I would even split a bet on that.

2021 Daily Holidays that fall on August 17, include:

Balloon Airmail Day
Meaning of "Is" Day
National #2 Pencil Day
National Black Cat Appreciation Day
National Thrift Shop Day

August 17th was my dad's birthday too Smiling

I wouldn't mind forgetting my own birthday (or at least the number) but wouldn't be too happy if hubs did... Hilarious!

Tom, my garlic was really right on its normal schedule, but the two softneck varieties that I grow had larger bulbs than normal - presumably due to the milder winter that we had. The vultures are already circling, wondering when I will "have some to share" Big Grin (I have about 30 of each kind)

your crop looks great and a good looking drying setup, I was down to the ukranian centre this morning a couple travelling garlic sellers had set up shop for the weekend, I picked up some garlic varieties that I had never heard of before, a variety called Ivan, have you ever planted it? My largest garlic bulbs this year were the music variety and a variety called german white, I pulled my shallots today, a little dissappointed, I guess i did not realize but you plant one and only get a return of 2...

Thanks, Tom - the humid weather sure isn't helping the garlic dry so far! I've never tried "Ivan," but googled it and it looks like one I would like Smiling (So very many different varieties of garlic out there...)

I've never grown shallots before, either - at least not successfully; last year I tried starting some from seed but the seedlings didn't do that well and I never did plant them out in the garden; maybe I'll give them another shot next year.

Happy Labor Day weekend, everyone - it feels like autumn is suddenly in the air here, highs in the low 70s now and lows in the 50s and soon in the 40s. And everything is just looking like the end of the season is lurking around the corner...

Sunny with a temperature of 66 degrees and a steady breeze outside.

Spent most of yesterday digging Dandelions out of the boulevard (and put some mulch around the trees there) as the soil is not nice and moist which make weeding fairly easy.
Spent a LOT of time pulling spurge by hand, as a large area the grass is mostly dead but that crap is spreading heavily.
Down home I would put it in the City Compost Bin, but up here it is bagged , usually, and goes in the garbage

Buffalo Grass on the boulevard hill is doing well but the darn stuff wants to grow towards the curb rather than uphill.
May buy some plugs again (I killed the last plugs I bought when I planted a tree.) and see how that works; this Buffalo Grass is from some seed I bought at the same time I put in the Pasture Grass listed below.
It did nothing for ten years then one year, shazzam, there it was. (I killed the last plugs I bought when I planted a tree.)
Many years years ago I put a pasture grass mix on what was then a weed infested steep hill I mowed once a month.

I have a area of what I think is Orchard Grass, from the Pasture Mix I used, that also inhabits the area where the Buffalo Grass is so I leave it as a memory of when I was first trying to turn gruesome gulch into a lawn. (I do believe , for years , taking the ashes out of the wood/garbage burner and just throwing them with a sand shovel over the hill, did a lot to make the soil better as now when I pull weeds I often pull out night crawlers with it.
