All along the east coast, for a stretch of over a 1,000 miles, it's the same story: SOAKED!

My rain guage is 'only' 12 inches high; I emptied it the day before yesterday and now it is overflowing.

The high winds and heavy rains have knocked off most of the rose blooms in the garden, but a few are still hanging on.

Still, given the drought-like conditions we had over the summer, the rain will help the roses as we go into autumn.

If you get tired of the rain, PLEASE send it my way Fed Ex overnight! Seriously! This past month (September) we got a whole wopping 0.06" of rain. Yes, less than a tenth of an inch of rain. We usually get at least 2" of snow in September, and this one was one of the driest on record. I haven't seen rain at my house since like July 4th when it rained and hailed all day.

I wonder about the effect that will have on elements of the infrastructure. Around here, we absolutely cannot handle even the regular seasonal downpours. Ditches, creeks, and rivers flood almost every year, roads have to be closed, and power blackouts are common when trees are uprooted and fall on the power lines. I can't imagine what would happen after a foot of rain.

Being so close to the Hudson River our storm sewers can handle the heavy rains, but the railway tracks couldn't. The commuter trains into Manhattan were delayed on Friday, so I worked from home. I had no interest in standing on the platform getting soaked by driving winds and rains waiting for a late train.

That is what happened to us last year. No rain all summer then fall rains just in time to make everything grow and get hit by an early freeze. Good luck!

Bone dry here since April. Then, the day after I read this thread it started raining an inch a day. And it's still going. Who knew rainy weather was contagious?

Steve - Start sneezing my way!! But make sure that it's rain and not the snow that they're starting to predict for next week. I guess I have to bust my butt this weekend installing the rest of the mulch before we get a killing frost all ready!!!
