Its a perennial. I had them coming up all over my yard in CA zone 8.

They are a nuisance here in Florida and really difficult to eradicate; you try to pull them up or dig them up and it's impossible to get all of those little bulbils!

We have a foxtail fern, and it definitely doesn't look like the picture you showed. It's much more light green, not as fluffy, and more spread apart like @itsbee's picture.

Perhaps the dark green color of the one in the picture you showed us is just because of the way the photo is taken, or maybe because mine doesn't get enough sun.

The plant in Itsbee's photo is definitely the species densiflorus but with the way it fans out and scrambles, it sure looks to me more like the cultivar named 'Sprengeri'.


The straight species and the cultivar 'Myers' have more of the "Fox Tail" growth habit, hense the common name.
