Before I fertilize a plant, I check the ppm with a TDS meter. If the ppm are below 280, I fertilize with about 150 ppm of nutrient, that way I never burn my plants. See the difference between a plant with high ppm vs low ppm. When I water, I use clean water almost pure with a ppm of about 17 and allow a little to drain into the drain pan and test it. You can see if I fertilized the plant that has 1294 ppm, I would burn it or even kill it. The lower other reading is telling me Its ok to add a low dose of fertilizer.

The first photo is plain rain a high 41 ppm because its old, haven't had rain in a while.
The second photo is after adding 6 ml of a water soluble fertilizer to 2 gallons of water raising it 97 ppm.
The third photo is feeding time with water that's a very low in fertilizer. total 138-41=97 ppm only.
The manufacturer recommends using 15 times the amount I used and if I would had used that much, I would of killed my plants. I hope that helps you. BTW the plant in the background is a Vitex and not what some may think.
