Aloha

I planted my Bay 1 year ago and all of a sudden one stalk shot straight up while the rest of the plant is still a bush. What causes this and is it ok to cut it back?

Just top the tip and the side branches will catch up the top. I wouldn't cut it back to the level of the smaller branches, just top the tip only.
