My daughter decided to grow corn this year and everything worked out well and they germinated nicely. They are about 5 weeks old now and she noticed that a few of the leaves have holes in them. She had a problem earlier with with snails that munched layers of cells and made tracks but not making holes. Any ideas?
Only 2 plants are affected now, but she wanted to stop it before more plants get holey.

I'm wondering about ear worms.
at the end of the season. ear worms will eat my new plantings, living in the very new growth.

I dig them out of the top of the plant... and then? good to go.

surprised to see them this easrly, though.

European corn borer attacks the plant when it is young and eats in a whorl of leaves close to or in the stalk. The caterpillar is small and the holes are small, but as the corn leaf grows the previously eaten holes appear to grow too. The damage is often seen later as large holes in the corn leaves after they have grown. European corn borer can be controlled by BT.
