Our bougainvillea hadn't bloomed in about 9 months . It finally started blooming about 2 weeks back . There are some branches in the middle that don't have any leaves . Is there anyway to get these branches to bloom /grow leaves ?

The plant is about 2.5 years old .

Note : I don't know much about growing plants and I thought this Bougainvillea was dead since there were no leaves or flowers till a couple of weeks back . So apologies if this question is stupid .

Scratch the stem with your finger nail with a tiny scratch, and see if you see any green under the bark. If you see green then the limb is alive and will reproduce leaves in the future.

Welcome! here newbie. Don't give up on your Bougainvillea! It could be that it just needs some TLC. Mine gets frostbite every year and I have to wait patiently for it to come out again.

OEL gave you some good advice on checking to see if a branch is still alive. If you don't see white or green inside just take your pruning shears and cut those away. It will probably be beneficial to trim it up and don't think that a bare branch is dead automatically, because those that get nipped will set new leaves.

Finally, give it some coffee grinds around the base of the plant for food. Sprinkle the used coffee grinds around your plant and give it a good watering. I bet you'll be surprised by the outcome. I tip my hat to you.

Thank you oneyeluke and slowcala . Looks like some of those branches were dead . So I cut those . I will try using coffee grind as fertilizer .

I am actually glad that the plant has flowers now because it didn't have any until a couple of weeks back but now that I see flowers I am greedy and want to see more 😃
