I recently planted a dahlia and it got blown over and smashed the leaves
Can I cut it back and will it continue to grow

A picture would help.

It's due to be cold this weekend. Protect your plant with a box. Generally I plant here in zone 7, the same time as I plant tomatoes...the end of May.

If the cold doesn't halt all growth (or kill it) it should provide new sprouts and grow.

Do not cut back the cotyledons!

That's their life support system until they grow true leaves.

Somehow I thought it was planted outdoors and started from a tuber. My error.

Stop worrying, just continue doing as if the plant was never damaged--water, sun, warmth (it's a dahlia), and wait until a new off shot appears from that part still above ground. Even in nature plants get damaged, most are not fragile, especially dahlias.

@pirl maybe you're right.
I just saw 2 leaves and thought they were cotyledons.
