You shouldn't have to water it at all if it is outside in a bed. Only if the summer gets very hot and dry you may have to but Mother Nature usually provides enough.
Astilbe do not make good house plants!

Very good.
Mine here in SE Michigan broke through the solid almost 3 weeks ago. But since the last several days have be extra chilly, there has been little growth. With the weather warming up quite a bit over the next 10 days or so, I expect mine to really get going.
My Hostas poked through the earth at about the same time but they are up between 4-5" while the Astilbes are at around 2"! Aside from coneflowers, they are my favorite perennial! Good luck!
