I took this over from my mother because I thought I could save it. The trunk looks brown & dry & some leaves are white or brown. How can I save it

I don't see a problem. It is normal for lower stems to have dry, brown sheathes. Some brown leaf tips are also common.

Chamadorea Palms are favored hosts of spider mites so check carefully for them.

@willc should I leave the brown & white tipped leaves on?

You can trim the tips off to make it look better.

No soil. It is potted correctly and repotting it or replacing the soil would be a mistake.
