Dear Abby,

For four weeks now my new staghorn fern has been losing one small leaf per week. The leaf will turn yellow, weaken, and then brown. All the other leaves are green and appear healthy except for a few millimeters of browning here and there on the tips/edges. I water once a week by showering the entire fern thoroughly for two minutes.

Resigned,

Is your fern in a pot of soil or on a plaque? I've always had mine in its original pot of soil and give it just a little water (almost a splash) once a week on top of the brown flat fronds. They don't like a lot of water. I've never had one on a plaque or wood bark though so I can't advise on the best water method for that. It does sound like overwatering could be the cause.

The plant is mounted on a piece of wood and drained after watering. Pictures are attached, the little leaves were yellow before they turned brown and crispy.

Probably need to zoom in

It is normal for older fronds to yellow and die back as they age. I don't think your Staghorn has a serious problem. Be sure to give it a good soak at least weekly,

The yellowing has stopped but today a medium sized and healthy looking sterile frond just dropped on my head. I noticed a different smaller sterile frond was looking kind of weird. Is this a sign of something?

How do you water it and how often?

I water it once a week, which is just about when the moss seems dry on the very bottom. I think the moss dries out on the top earlier.

I shower it all over the base and leaves with a watering can in bathtub then let it drain most of the day. About 5 gallons poured over it in total.

I've had it about 2 months and haven't given it any fertilizer or anything except the water.

The moss should remain slightly damp at all times. I suggest watering as soon as the top surface of the moss feels just barely dry. When you water, focus on getting all of the moss completely saturated and dripping wet before returning it to the wall.

This has continued for a few months and definitely losing more leaves than are growing. Always one leaf at a time turns yellow and the rest look healthy.
