Oooooo, the cantaloupe sounds really nice right now. I'm very new to melons, so I have to ask: when will the cantaloupes and watermelons be ready to harvest?

One day at a time. Right now I am gorging on spring salads. Lettuce, pak choy. spinach, radishes, onions. Blueberries beginning to ripen. Summer squash maybe a week away.

Wow! That's great to hear Dillard! When we move (which is hopefully before fall) I am hoping to have a berry garden.

Sorry if I misunderstood, but did you mean that you've been growing watermelons for years?

I grow Ambrosia for years, they are so sweet when I withhold water at the end. Yes, I also grow watermelons for at least 10 years, I live to grow melons. Everything else is secondary.

I am having troubles with germination (about 30% so far), but it seems to be the trend with Cucurbitaceae this year here. I am seeding some more melons more later today and hope for the best.

Since I am the greatest watermelon lover in the universe (according to my mother) I would love to grow them but I lack the room and these hills are not the best environment for them. Funny thing is I could get watermelon seeds from Central Asia (Russia, Kazakhstan etc) which are very old fashioned cultivars, meaning smaller and with a much thinner rind than modern cultivars so popular in Europe and the US.
The Saviour.

I grow watermelon in container, I don't have room so I will try to train them to climb my fruit tree. Last year somehow the watermelons were not developed properly, they are not round, a bit lopsided for some reason.

Dillard, I had a volunteer Mini Love hybrid come up in the garden from where I planted them two years ago! It's probably only 16" long or so and already has a couple of blooms on it. I'm not sure what will come out of it but I'm watering it!! Smiling

I planted three hills of Mini Loves this year but the volunteer is *way* outgrowing and healthier than the ones from new seed. It will be interesting to see what I get.

So the watermelons do well in your containers? Because I wasn't sure if I was going to have transplant my honeydews to the ground.
