I have been sent a bare rooted merry weather damson tree that I ordered from a mail order company. However when I opened the box I noticed that it had huge thorns on it. Does a damson merry weather tree normally have thorns?

I don't think so. Can you post a photo?

That doesn't look right. Have you contacted the seller? I think you got the wrong Prunus sp. If I had to guess, because of the thorns and leaves, I would say its a Prunus spinosa. Did the seller also have Blackthorns for sale?
