Hi. I just bought what was probably once a stunning little tree but due to lack of attention at the garden centre in lockdown it is in bad shape. But, I got it for just £5!!!! Couldn't resist even the pot is worth more.

Just wondering if people think there is any chance of bringing it back to life?

Should I cut right back and hope for the best?

Any little branches I cut sadly have no green in them.

Your Podocarpus is a hardy conifer that can withstand quite a bit of abuse, so yours is still alive.

Its primary problem has been dehydration. Give it a good soak making sure the center root section is completely saturated. Going forward water it thoroughly at least once per week.

Remove all of the discolored lives as they will not recover. Any completely bare stems or very dry, brittle stems can also be removed.

Move it to a completely shaded location if you keep it outside. If you move it inside now or for the colder months, then keep it in a moderately sunny indoor location.

After it has recovered and is putting out lots of healthy new growth, you might consider moving it into a slightly deeper circular pot. But I advise against disturbing the soil and roots until it has recovered.

Thanks so much for the reply. Has given me some hope.

Would be a shame if it doesn't survive. Will update the post if/as any new shoots ever appear.
