My cat knocked over my Mexican fence post cactus and it took a pretty hard fall. Now it's sporting some black bruises with cracks. Will this resolve itself or would I need to cut it up a bit to prevent potential rot?

Welcome! neighbor!

I would leave it alone and let it resolve itself. Cactus are actually quite resilient. Some of mine have some pretty big scars and have survived.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and proclaiming...."WOW What a Ride!!" -Mark Frost
