So this was growing in my back yard (YAY!) and then someone took a shovel to it and hacked the top off (NOO!).

Can anyone identify it? And if it will make it?

I was planning to dig it up and transplant it already, just wanted it to have some leaves. But after what happened, I'm afraid the transplant coupled with the "trimming" will be too traumatic for it to survive through. And also I wanted to do this before it's roots went deeeep.
Now I'm afraid that if I let be and grow back, that it's roots will grow deeper than I can dig, and/or the transplant will be too shocking for it with its deep roots being disturbed.

What can I do? I really love this sapling, and what I suspect it will grow to become.

Thank you

As long as the 'heart' of the palm is intact, it will be fine. That ones looks as though someone cut leaf tips off, not the growing tip of the palm.
