Hello,
This is my first post and I'm an inexperienced gardener. This peony plant was transplanted 2 years ago. Last year it got some buds but it never bloomed. This year I have these buds showing and I thought they looked promising but as time passes I'm getting worried they will not bloom. Please let me know what you think!
I live in NY state.

Welcome!

I can think of a couple reasons peonies set buds that never open:

The plant is planted in too much shade

There was a late frost that damaged the buds

The soil isn't damp enough

Disease

As this happens every year, I would suspect too much shade.

Thank you so much for your reply. These get sun from about 10am through the evening.

There was a late frost this year. I set a garbage can over the shoots but did forget one night. Ugh I hope that's not the case.

So do you think these buds will definitely not open?

They're not brown so I would give them a chance. My peonies are just blooming now. You live in hardiness zone 5b to 6a so chances are its just a little too early.
