I have tentatively picked September 12 as the date for the fall swap. This morning, I received an E-Mail from Van Engelen that they will begin shipping in mid-October.

Question:
Should we move the swap date to October, or leave it in September and have a pick-up party when the bulbs are in?

Move Swap:

Pick-up Party:

2 parties, better than one!

You don't have to host both, Rick... we can find a park (if open) for bulb party

The planned date for the swap, Sep 12, is only 5 weeks away. What are your thoughts?

Do we...

plan on going ahead, taking what we think will be adequate precaution?

skip it, hoping things will be better in the spring?

It would be a shame to go the whole year without a swap, but this hasn't been a typical year. IF we go ahead, everyone will have to decide for themselves if it is worth the risk to themselves and family. I think it's 'safe' to say that 95% or more of us fall in to at least one of the high risk categories.

I was planning to come and take precautions, but another set of logistics comes into play for me... I think I'll be up here in Pittsburgh more than home in Frederick for the next month or two, as I oversee my dad's recovery. Seems I hit the right balance between firm & loving to get him motivated and keep him trying, whether it's activity or eating or staying hydrated. So most likely I'll be sending a few plants along with somebody (or keeping them until spring). (If Sulurph comes to the swap, I'll get her garlic relayed down to her.)

By all means, continue the gentle nagging! You've got him started, but keeping him going will probably be the bigger challenge.

I was here for 3 weeks, and things were going well, then I went home and it all went to h e double toothpicks. So after 4 days at home I came back up. I can't be here this next week, so we'll see if the caregivers can keep some momentum going for me. Crossing Fingers!

My mom wasn't expecting Dad & me to work so well together... she was afraid it would be more like my tweens, with a lot of yelling. LOL

But I digress...

Are you still comfortable with hosting this fall? Be sure you've thought that through, too.

I do not plan on coming as it's too much risk for me, my DH and his Mom. My mother in law turns 100 on the 17th of August and I have COPD. I'll just have to wait and see what the spring looks like. Shrug!

I think we're all getting more used to socially distant, masked outings... unfortunately this may conflict with other plans for me, too.
i'm pretty OK today, how are you? ;^)

I am really not ready for a swap. So I will also miss the September one. I am interested in the garlic, but I will not be able to pick them up, if they are going to be there for Spring I would like to have them. I am trying to weed 1-3 hours early in the morning, and then I am so tired I am not worth anything-digging all those roots----but I feel good with trying to win my war!

The consensus seems to be that most won't be able to make the swap for a variety of reasons. With the uncertainty, and growing number of social event cancellations, I think it only makes sense to cancel.

Maybe we can try again in the spring. Crossing Fingers!

Missing my plant buddies, but yes, postponing seems prudent.
Everyone stay safe!
As always, thanks for organizing us, Rick!
