I have taken this rubber plant on from a friend in the hope that I can try and save it. After weeks of consistent watering, there seems to be no improvement. Is the plant dead, or is there anything I can do like take a cutting and try to propogate ?

Cuttings should only be taken from healthy plants. Your soil is too wet , let it dry out for a week or 10 days and put in a bright well light area and wait.
NOT A EXPERT! Just a grow worm! I never met a plant I didn’t love.✌
