I have two lilacs that are down to just one cane. I haven't seen any suckers in years. The canes seem to be doing fine, but I want bushes, not a three-foot high cane with a couple blossoms every year.

Is there anything I can to do to promote more canes?

I grow lilacs in my garden but am a novice on this subject. However, I actually had the same situation. I removed grass from around the base and fertilized it. It rewarded me with a new cane and two suckers.

I found an article with some ideas you may want to consider trying.

Best wishes!
