Hello everyone,

My areka palm has been dying for the last few months. I did a lot of research but could not find a a solution. As one can see on the photos, the leaves are turning brown and dying. there are quite a few new leaves but some of them are already turning brown too.
The areka is standing in a room with a lot of light and no direct sun. I water it approx once a week when the soil ist dry on the top at least 1 - 2 cm deep.

I would appreciate every help,
thank you and have a wonderful day,

Emi

Please post a photo that shows the base of the stems and how it is potted.

How far away is the nearest window?

Hello WillC,

Here is the photo of the base
The nearest window is 1,5m away (east)
I thought maybe the tap water has to much chalk?

Thank you for your help,
Emi

Thanks for the additional photo, Emi. I wanted to be sure it is an Areca Palm and it is.

How long have you had it and when was it repotted?

When you repotted it, how much of the original soil did you remove? What did you replace it with?

Is your tap water hard?

I have had it for almost two years. It was doing extremely well but since I moved to another city (7 month ago) it has been quite unhappy. It has more light than before but the only thing that really changed is the tap water that is a lot harder than the one before.
When I got it I repotted it in a terra cotta Pot (the same size then the pot I bought it in). I removed little of the original soil and added house plant soil the salesperson recommended.

Thanks,
Emi

Have you checked it for spider mites?

Hard water is not good for it, but I think there are other problems as well. How deep down does the soil get dry just before you water? How often do you water?
