The time to prune adult lilac plants is just after the flowers have finished in the spring. Lilacs will set next season's flower buds almost immediately, so late pruning will mean giving up the next year's flowers. If you don't care about flowers you can prune now, however I wouldn't prune more than 1/3 of the plant at one time.
