After three months in Vigoro (or Miracle Gro) vegetable soil, I got a poor harvest of potatoes, and the skins seem flaky. They were drenched in rain a week before harvest, but I let the soil dry out before I dumped my 20-gallon pot.

Are these OK to eat or this is normal?

Not sure which type - a friend bought three types for me, white, baby red and purple. These are the purple ones.

I wouldn't have a problem eating them but, I would peel them.

They are fine to eat.

I planted five seed potato pieces in a large, 20-gallon planter. I had large foliage with no blight for three months. I understand that either drought or a bacteria can cause the flaky skin. Don't know why I got such a low yield, unless the pot was crowded; but it wasn't as crowded as many planters I've seen on the internet.

Large foliage is not always a good sign.
Potatoes are known to put their effort into foliage when too much nitrogen is used; acidic soil also greatly increases yield.
Potatoes give smaller potatoes when spaced less than 12 inches apart, 16 is need for truly large potatoes.
Constraints of a pot also limit amount and size.
