I'm glad you figured it out.

The pH comment: Those of us living in alkaline soils don't do well with Lupines. If we don't add a lot of peat to the soil at planting time, they look like your little Lupines did and then they die. Even with the soil amendments, they only survive 2 or 3 years before the alkaline creep gets them.
