This handsome devil is called a Yellow-bellied Bee Assassin (Apiomerus flaviventris), and is reputed to catch bees, but I've seen them catch flies and spiders and other insects. So it's sort of like the praying mantis--sometimes a friend, sometimes not, but always a hunter. Cool markings, eh?

For me, gardening is really just an excuse for playing in the dirt. Admittedly, plants are a satisfying by-product.
