Yes, please keep me in mind when you do introduce one of those reds, Debra -- it's exciting to me that one or more may be EV's! Hurray!

@Shive Thanks, Debra! I have a seedling that I want to register but it is so slow to increase. After 4 years, there are only 5 fans. I am hoping it will increase faster after I line it out this year.

Here is a nice surprise that I found in my garden so far this year. One of my seedling is showing potential for broken color. So far it has bloomed like below with the first 2 blooms of the year. THere is only one scape on it so I will not be able to tell until next year if it will produce scapes with this broken color pattern again.

Karen - The broken color thing doesn't do much for me. I tend to hide from Explosion in the Paint Factory. But I love all the other seedlings in that post. The polychrome is appealing, and the red with the teeth is very showy. All three of the Violet Becomes You babies are pretty. The middle one is my favorite.

Yes, with broken color, it's a love or hate relationship for some people. I used to see it as some form of unwanted mutation and thus undesirable in a garden setting. But now, I am kind of coming around to appreciating it. It looks kind of cool.

Celeste, just want to share with you what I observe from my garden this year. I notice better branching with 4 years old seedlings. I also found that seedlings that did not rebloom in all previous years are now showing rebloom.

After lurking and drooling upon these seedling posts the last couple years I finally have my first seedling ever!! Hurray! This is a one year old seedling that picked the 4th of July to explode. It is my first so of course I am in love and think it's beautiful. Lovey dubby

There are tons of others (all one year olds) ready to show their stuff. I am in heaven. I was so smitten with it this morning that I almost bent down to kiss it. The only thing that stopped me was my neighbor's window faces the seedling bed. Now I'm as nutty as the rest of you. Hilarious!

Bentley Samuel x Red River Dancer

Please encourage me that her stats are good for a one year old seedling. 36 inches tall, 7 inch bloom, 12 buds. Not sure how to count branching but that looks good. BTW, here in New Hampshire we are under drought conditions and had a mild winter. It is reflected in the bud count of my registered daylilies. I am seeing very poor bud counts this year. This seedling is better than most of them.

afternoon:

Congrats, on your first seedling bloom, Celeste! It is a beauty! I love its green sepals! And it seems to have great substance too as it does not show any substance deterioration in the afternoon. Thumbs up Thumbs up

This is my first ever ever seedling. Hurray! Hurray! Not a raving beauty but it's mine Thumbs up nodding Nice big flower 6+" but the scape couldn't hold it up once it bloomed. thinking next year it might be stronger?? This is purchased seed from winter of 19. I so far have 8 seedlings with scapes out of maybe 50-60 that survived the winter from all my purchases.
two blooms from diff days

Celeste, that's absolutely beautiful.

Congrats on your first seedling bloom, too, Marcia. A lot more come out looking like Star of India x Tripping Out than Celeste's Bentley Samuel x Red River Dancer. My first one isn't exactly amazing either, but it's still in my keeper bed. I'm sure you'll have plenty of lovely surprises coming your way.

Thank you for the acorns, thumbs and comments on my baby! Lovey dubby I went out about 100 more times to swoon over her and she looks exactly the same now in the afternoon as she did in the morning. So that's encouraging. I was crossing my fingers all week that this very first bloom would open before we left for a 3-day trip to Maine (leaving in the morning). I guess talking sweet to her worked. Smiling If she didn't open today or in the morning my daughter was under strict orders to come over Monday to take pictures and alert me. Now I'm watching another cross that's bud is huge and looks like it will open in the morning. I've been waiting for this trip for months since the Covid lockdown but strangely now that I have seedlings ready to bloom I'm balking a little. Sighing!

Celeste - I think your first seedling is absolutely gorgeous. The pinkish red color is pretty, and I love the big green eye and the green on the sepals. A 7-inch bloom has good balance for 36-inch scapes. What I've found in my seedlings is those that have 10 or more buds in the first year, usually go on to have high bud counts in subsequent years. You have every right to be proud of this seedling!

Debra....thank you for the confidence booster. I was hoping the stats were good for such a young seedling. I really love the look of this one and can't wait to see what it will do in future years. It is pitiful how poor the bud count is on my registered daylilies this year. Some only have FIVE buds! And we don't get rebloom here so it will be a short season I'm afraid. I blame it on the mild winter and the drought. It's interesting to me that several of my one year old seedlings have more buds than my registered ones! A couple of them have 15 or more buds so just knowing counts will improve is making me happy. Thank you ALL for your thumbs and acorns!! Group hug You guys are my inspiration and motivation!

Most of my seedling blooms so far this year have been duds. But this FFE got my attention.

Thumb of 2020-07-05/Dennis616/f11ba7

This is the first seedling where I crossed two red seedlings that weren't applique but likely had it recessively, and got an applique back. I knew it should work, but nice to finally get real verification.

I like the triangular applique, and the pink hue of the petals. But there is more lavender than what I am going for, and this bloom does have a lot of flaws. Nonetheless I consider it to be very encouraging.

It's amazing how a lot of failed effort can be overridden by one encouraging result!

An acorn for your wonderful quote! Can't express better myself! Thanks Dennis for sharing for your quote and lovely seedling!

Congrats on your first seedling bloom, Marcia! Isn't it exciting! My first seedling bloom is a mini which has been struggling ever since it bloomed 4 years ago. Its genetics must be so screwed up making it an extremely weak plant. Not sure how two large parents produced a dwarf but it happened in the case of GREAT WHITE DOVE x THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE.

Gerry, I like the flowers of your Dragonfly Dawn X Jag esp. the first one!
