![]() By Skiekitty | For people who keep freshwater aquariums: when you do your water changes, keep the water for your houseplants or take it outside for your garden. Fish Emulsion is a nice way of saying fish poo, and a lot of expensive organic fertilizers are "fish emulsion". Why spend $20 for a bottle of fish poo when you can get it for free from your aquarium? We have two small tanks now - with big fish. ![]() So...I need to do frequent partial water changes. My houseplants love this water! Another good thing about it is (especially during the winter months), it's already at room temperature. ![]() |

Do you dilute it more? Or just give it to them straight up |

I just finished watering all my houseplants with aquarium water, and I get on here and see this. ![]() Yep, straight up, no dilution. Oh, and my larger houseplants are fishy graveyards for those that don't make it. I had to bury one tonight. ![]() |

Joannabanana said:Do you dilute it more? Or just give it to them straight up I just dip mine out of the tank and pour it right on the plants. [Ha! I just read several articles on how to type the accent mark for your name, Renée. I still can't figure it out that way, but duh (!) ![]() ![]() ![]() |

One caution....I used aquarium water on some small seedling hosta and had mold on the soil in a few days. I had sterilized the soil. Paul Smith Pleasant Grove, Utah |

Onewish1 said:now you make me want to have a fish tank!!!! ![]() I've become so fond of watching mine that I only took half of them outdoors for the summer! They're back inside now, and considerably larger than the ones that spent the summer indoors. They evidently found plenty of larvae to eat. I've been babying along a rooted start of Blue Butterfly Bush for two years, waiting to see blooms...brought it indoors before the frosts, watered it with aquarium water...and it bloomed! ![]() ![]() |

Great Idea.. When I was breeding fish I always used my fish tank water for my plants and they Loved it. Alot of fish breeders keep pothos cuttings in the fish tanks to cut back on alge growth in the tanks and little fish like Killies breed in the roots of the plants..Win Win The horse is God's gift to mankind. ~Arabian Proverb |

I belonged to a amazing fish club in NJ for a quite a few years and was invited to a friend's fish room. This was Very special he did not do this often so I was Happy his name was Rosario Lacort he founded alot of fish and has alot named for him. One of the Neon Tetra species is named for him. And in "Every"tank he had pothos growing. He siad it kept the nitrates down and green alge growth down. Since then I never had a tank without it. I even sent some with my fish when I re-homed them to a lady in Co. And with the tank to Ohio. You are making me miss my fish ![]() it was a 200 gallon with fancy goldfish from Hawaii ![]() Anyone have fishey pictures ?? The horse is God's gift to mankind. ~Arabian Proverb |

I let my pond go to hell this summer. I couldn't see it most of the summer (the bluebeards ate the top part of the pond as it's a double pond "waterfall" type), and then the algae took over (gonna try the pothos as it's much more easily controlled than duckwort. The goldfish I had in there ($0.25/feeders) got eaten by birds/neighbor's cats/snakes, so I'm actually debating on ripping the pond out & just saying ![]() Roses are one of my passions! I water most of my potted plants on the terrace with water I dip out of the fish pond, and I have a grocery store phalaenopsis that lives on a ledge over my indoor pond, I dip it into the pond every couple weeks to water it. I also use pothos to filter the indoor pond, they are growing in boxes above the pond and the water gets pumped up through the roots and falls back. No soil at all but the pond is crystal clear, to be fair it doesn't get more than an hour or two of full sun. I thought about burying the lost fish in plants but I'm afraid the cats would try to dig them up. Instead I fling them into the overgrown lot next door for the feral cats. I suppose that is recycling ![]() A day without sunshine is like, you know, night. |

All this talk about fish tanks and I realized that the glass under the light was in dire need of cleaning. That was a bit of a job that wasn't planned for today ![]() |

The kid just walked in and the 1st thing out of her mouth was "Mom, what did you do to the fish tank? It looks different." ![]() Guess who's job it was to keep that tank clean. |

My three big swimmers perform fishy water ballet this time of the evening; they're all swimming together, back and forth in front of the glass. They won't let me forget to feed them! When someone walks by they'll actually make a big splash or two; their form of yelling, I guess. ![]() I tried water plants in with my fish. They just ate them. ![]() The little shredded particles were a bear to keep out of the pump filter, so I didn't replace them. |

Yes, we have the glass blade. Issue is the teenager in house hasn't been cleaning it as often as it should be. The top glass under the light had green goo and water mineral deposits that were a bit tough to get off the glass. all good now![]() ![]() |
