The Carr Fire in Shasta County started at the end of July 2018. These pictures were taken on September 10, 2018.
I was amazed about the growth in those short weeks without any rain.

Both oaks and redwoods are fire-adapted. IF they've actually been destroyed, the answer to what happened will be much more complex than simply stating the fire killed them. In fact, nearly all terrestrial native plant communities in North America are fire-dependant, which means our nearly nationwide policy of fire suppression over the last 100+ years has had significant long term consequences. Ironically, one of the most obvious consequences of fire suppression is bigger and more intense wildfires. We've really started to pay the price for that one over the past couple of decades. We aren't alone. It's a phenomenon that can be observed on parts of every continent but Antarctica.

That oak fire adaptation is good to know, if that's the case. The last time I was through the burned part of Hwy 140 on the west side of Yosemite, though, those oaks looked pretty toasty.

But I guess we must have had lots of oak wildfires in the past, yet we still have (or had) all those large majestic oaks in the state parks and open space areas.

Evaluating an iris seedling, hopefully for rebloom

Was glad to read you are OK Sherry @Henhouse, we have a friend in Boulder Creek that lost her home of 44 years.

We are sitting here between 3 active fires, all in the wooded mountains, the closest one here in Sonoma county is north of us. it caused a few of our local friends living along the Russian River to be evacuated, they have gradually lifted those evacuation orders the last couple of days as the weather has been cooler and mor cooperative and the fire was driven further north. We then have the Napa/Solano county fires to the east and the Pt Reyes fires to the south. Depending on the direction of the winds, the air goes from a bit of blue showing to totally smoky, my garden is covered in ash. I didn't expect fires until at least Oct-Nov. like the last 3 years but the dry lightning storm we had a week ago was unprecedented. Masks are doing double duty. Sad

Here is the photo Pleasant Valley Iris Garden posted on their FB page, they are east about 60 miles from us

A whole new cloud of smoke popped up behind our hills. I REALLY hope we don't have to evac again!

I'm just hoping it's from them putting the fire out, because fires smoke after they've been put out.

Agree. Fires were being suppressed, but the forests were not being managed to reduce the fuel loads that these normal fires would have reduced. Very dense forests resulted with dense understory vegetation. This has resulted in fires burning much hotter and are more unpredictable. Sad

Thanks Laurie, we are doing fine, not in any danger here, staying in as much as possible to avoid the smoke. Thankfully it's cooler this week and I don't have to water the pots on the patio as often.
