The toothed leaves don't match Ajuga reptans.
I'm going to throw out the suggestion of Plectranthus, given the leaves and the zone it's in... and I know nothing about Plectranthus! Rolling my eyes.

Eeek! Look at the long list of Ajuga species! Hilarious! That's if it is Ajuga, it does resemble it.

http://garden.org/plants/browse/plants/genus/Ajuga/

The leaves can vary on Ajuga according to which cultivar it is, look at A. reptans 'Chocolate Chip' for example (which this isn't)

It looks a lot like and established/older Ajuga reptans atropurpurea (or cultivar).

Like everyone else, Ajuga reptans was my first thought too, but I've never seen leaf dentition like that on any Ajuga that I've grown or googled.
(Also like everyone else, almost needless to say, I grow a few cultivars too. Smiling )
Ajuga jenevensis is the only reasonably commonly-grown species I can find with somewhat pronounced leaf dentition; however, this plant is not it.

Sorry, but I'm not getting an Ajuga reptans vibe off this plant. It certainly looks like Lamiaceae.
Cheryl, would you mind if I posted your photos on other plant identification sites?

It may be ... as the few stems that are showing look more square than round. But even that isn't definitive.

Lori, feel free to pass on the pic as I'd like to know what this is. I wish I could have gotten a cutting. It was gorgeous, growing in both shade and part sun.
This was found while on a business trip to Kauai. IDK what zone Lihue, Kauai is in?? I toured the hotels amazing garden and saw it. I also saw it growing along the golf courses.
Here is another picture it is growing behind the dwarf Monkey Grass. It is taller than most ajuga masses, about 12". I think I am returning to Kauai mid December, I will get more pictures or try to smuggle in a cutting. At the very least, find a gardener (who are usually hidden from view!) and get him to give me a personal tour:

So do we still need another picture in the DB? If so, which one do you want?

Wow ... that is an amazing planting of Hemigraphis! You should add those first two photo's to the database: Red Flame Ivy (Hemigraphis alternata)

Our Wal-Mart Garden Centers sell the cultivar 'Exotica': Purple Waffle Plant (Hemigraphis 'Exotica') but it's not as nice as Hemigraphis alternata. I received cuttings of that beauty in a plant swap on Dave's Garden some years ago and it was so pretty! The cuttings rooted easily and I ended up with two full hanging baskets but unfortunately lost them to a winter freeze.

Done. And done. You know in Hawaii, not only does it never freeze on the islands coastlines, but the temperatures are rather constant. Aside from the winds and rains the flora and fauna have the best climate. The plants there seem like mutants, growing to huge, almost unrecognizable proportions. Even if I do find hemigraphis at my nursery, I can't expect it to do well as we do drop into below 40's often, and the plant can't take it. I have enough hanging plants. I might have to admire this one from afar.
