I'm fairly new to gardening, so I don't have a ton of experience with annuals. But I'd like to put an annual vine on a west-facing brick wall on my patio (it will be in a hole where a tree was). I'm zone 6b, and summers can get very hot. Any suggestions for what might thrive?

Most of the annual vines I know don't flower till later in the season .
May I ask why annual?

Do you have a trellis?

There are also cup and saucer and climbing snapdragon (both worth the try )

Following here. Looking for some interesting annual vines. If I start from seed indoors a month before the season, how fast will it grow to a few feet?

That depends on what vine you are speaking of?

Nasturtiums. I love love love the fun leaves and flowers. Oh, and with some types you can eat the flowers.

Bought as a houseplant it will sunburn at first but should then impress you with its' growth, "Pothos."

My favorites are Cardinal Climbers (because hummers love them) and moonflowers (because I love them). I have one planter for just those growing on a trellis.

Both Nice vines do you save seeds or do they self sow?

I'll either save seeds or just buy them, and start them indoors each spring. I grow them in containers and I replace the potting mix each year, so no chance of self sowing. The one time I tried to reuse the potting mix, the plants really didn't do so well at all that summer.

I live in central KY in zone 6b.
I, too, would vouch for Morning Glories, Sweet Peas & perhaps Moonflowers, which I will plant for the first time this spring because they are lovely.
Also, ornamental (or edible) climbing beans.
I have grown these in full sun on fences, but not up against a brick wall.
That west-facing brick wall is going to be very hot! Just check growing information carefully; and, I would mulch well and water when we hit those dry spells!

Vines are wonderful. Passion vines provide a food source for caterpillars, cardinal climber (or cypress vines) are great for hummingbirds. Pearl milkweed is a host plant for butterflies, morning glories make lovely flowers, hyacinth beans are interesting, and snapdragon vines draw the bees. There are so many varieties to choose from that it's hard to pick a favorite.

In my area... those morning glories and cardinal climer / cypress vine... Extremely seedy... plant one this year see tons of them next year.

Once you have them... better not plan on ever reclaiming that space!

Heavenly blue is safe, moon vine is safe...neither self sows... There are some fancy types that I haven't had any luck growing...

I like beans... Whether runner beans (Phaseolus coccineus), hyacinth beans (Lablab purpureus), or just edibles like cherokee tears or yard longs... all attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Look nice on a bamboo tipi too!

Sprouted several lavender moon vines in the greenhouse earlier and planted them out this morning. They grow quickly and are great for the night pollinators. There are lots of bats in this area and they're drawn to night-blooming daturas and moon vines. I enjoy watching them swoop around.

I'm going to try a few of this vine this summer, already have them started from seeds and are doing well. I've got at least another month to go before planting outside though.

Silver Lace vine is a good one too if you want fast growth, I had that and hyacinth bean vine growing on the same fencing and they put on a show all summer. Plus cardinal climber vine and white moon flower vine. Love a good vine.

I just purchased a Mexican Flame Vine because seeds proved impossible to germinate. Hoping it will draw lots of butterflies this summer. I planted it in a 3 gallon pot and plunged that into a huge planter box so that I can pull it out, cut it back, and overwinter it indoors.

@Grammachar, you'll like the Mexican flame vine/ they can get huge. Mine has been in the ground for five years and have survived that freeze we had 2 yrs ago. They get pruned every year and will bloom nicely.

I have many of the vines everyone mentioned along with clematis, some not doing too well here, but the sweet autumn clematis is the one that thrives and seedlings pop up everywhere and the purple passion vine grows well.
My son have the yellow jasmine vine and my SIL has grown the yellow butterfly vine for years.
