Thread OP

Hi all! I'm new to Hoyas and recently purchased my first one from a local plant shop. Right after I brought it home I noticed one leaf turning bright yellow with a large dry, dead patch on it, then a few others like it. Most of those leaves have since fallen off, and now I only see one leaf that has the same dry patch I noticed before, although there isn't any yellow. I looked for mealybugs but couldn't find any, so I'm not sure what to think. The rest of the leaves also look a bit pale to me, but I'm not sure how deep green they're supposed to be?

If it helps, this little guy is still in his nursery pot but sitting in a cachepot. I've watered it twice since I got it, checking to make sure the soil was dry first. I keep it indoors on a side table near a south-facing window where it gets plenty of sun during the day. I live in the midwest so it's a little dry and pretty cool right now, but inside where the plant is is about 65F or so.

I've attached some pictures of the plant and some of the fallen/concerning leaves. The first image is from the day I brought it home, and the rest are from today. Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you!!

Welcome! I wish I was better with Compacta so I could help you. I had one that I ended up throwing out because it was such a mealy bug magnet and I couldn't let it infect all my other money--err plants. *Blush* If it's in the original soil, you may not be able to really tell if it's dry all the way down. Also, plants have a tendency to freak out when their environment changes which could be the reason you lost leaves. From your pictures, your plant looks pretty good, but maybe the roots are deteriorating. You could take it out of the pot, gently, and see what's going on. If it's wet in the bottom, let it dry out more. They kinda like being pot bound so that's okay. Hoyas are an addiction that I'm not sorry to have. Smiling

The leaf is probably just old and dropped by the plant in reaction to change in environment stress. The one still on your plant looks like it has a bit of physical damage, not dryness or rot or anything. As long as it is not worsening, it's just a cosmetic scar and nothing to worry about. My Rope has a number of them from bangs and bumps and cat nips over the years, it happens! Your plant overall looks pretty good.

I would highly recommend you repot it ASAP though. You may not need to go up in pot size (as Magpie mentioned, they like being snug) but nursery soil/regular potting mix can be a killer for these hoyas because it's just too rich and doesn't dry out fast enough. They're more like a succulent than a tropical! A good mix for hoyas is half potting soil, half orchid mix. Keep it in the sunniest window you've got, and water only when pretty well dry through (use a meter or probe if you're not completely sure).
