I've only been to an off-leash park once, quite by accident. I took Frankie on a walk to a Whatcom Park in Bellingham, suitably on-leash per most parks. When we arrived, it was a leash-free window and all one could see were dogs running every which way, in and out of the water. Rather took me aback, I wasn't at all expecting that. My nice quiet walk instantly turned into a giant dog party. But, we got into the spirit of it and Frankie had a good time. I have to say I wouldn't seek that out intentionally - a bit too much commotion for me, and Frankie was less than enthusiastic about answering my whistle...

I always worry about the person that does not take into consideration just how well mannered their dog is, around both other people and dogs.
Ran into that at one of my agility classes with Nikki when she was just 8 months old. Boy was that scary.

I agree regarding the restaurants and grocery stores Smiling
I'm always surprised at how well most dogs get along with one another when they're in the offleash setting. There is a park here in Seattle (the old sandpoint naval station) that has a huge offleash park (its fenced in and goes all the way from parking lot to water (with a couple of gates in between so if you don't want your dog to get all the way to the water you don't have to. There is also a shy/old/small dog area and that's also very cute, the dogs seem secure and happy to be socializing with each other! Going to a place that didn't have the fencing would bother me, I would feel that its too easy for the pups to run off if they get distracted Sticking tongue out
Cheers

I think a dog's behavior often mirrors their owner. Last summer, we pulled our boat out of the water at a state park and my dog was not leashed for the brief time it takes to walk up the boat ramp to the truck and do the tying down for travel, and ran into a woman with a much larger leashed dog. Frankie was glad to be off the boat and also glad to go meet another canine. As they were sniffing butts, I gave little thought to any of it until the woman went absolutely ballistic, yelling whose dog is this, and demanding that I get my animal under control, tugging on her leash, and essentially got both the dogs totally worked up about nothing. I opened the truck door, told the woman to just 'chill' and Frankie jumped into the cab. Sheesh. As you note, Greg, most dogs will get along fine if left to their own devices.

My smallest kid, Dixie, (translate lightest) weighs in at 70 lbs. That was March 2012...will be interesting to see what she is in 2013....perhaps heavy for a rednose pit, but she is pure muscle from playing with her BIG ball. Whistling

She does love her BIG ball...and ALWAYS remembers where she left it. Once when the sliding glass door was open, she managed to get it IN the house. Not so much fun trying to get it away from her, but I did laugh in spite of myself Shrug! No point in crying over spilt milk or knick-knacks Rolling my eyes.
