Within a couple weeks, people are going to start thinking about starting vegetable gardens. Seeds will be ordered and plans drawn up. A lot of people will be searching for information on when to plant each kind of vegetable.

So, in preparation for this coming season, I've been working for a while on a spring vegetable planting guide, where you enter your location and it will tell you when you should plant each item.

So, for example, if you enter a zipcode of 75766 (my zipcode) then it will tell me that my last frost date is around March 13. It will then give me a list of all the various vegetables and when I should start them indoors, when should I transplant them, or when should I direct sow the seeds, etc.

I'm starting to get enough progress that I'm ready to have a few people look at it and give me feedback on whether it matches their expectations. So, if you're interested in checking the feature out, please send me a tree-mail and I'll add you to the beta group.

All beta testers/participants will be given a microbadge commemorating their participation.

That sounds awesome, Dave. Are you going to have Canadian postal codes too? In Calgary our average last frost is May 25th, but Edmonton (3 hours North) is May 6th. Calgary has average 112 frost free days and Edmonton has 140.

Initially the system will likely only support the United States because that's the only data set I have been able to get. Cities close to the US will work because the data is very close. For example, Vancouver will work because it's so close to Blaine, WA (the nearest station).

Being able to add in custom data, however, will be something that I will work to get supported, maybe even there for launch! All I really need to know is the average first frost date and I can make it work. I would love to support major cities all around the world.

If every province in Canada and other countries around the world published information like that, Evan, we would have the whole world covered perfectly with this feature.

I found maps for Saskatchewan (and Ontario I think) but nothing tied to station/town locations. Most aggie schools extensions have this kind of info. here so maybe a little more searching will yield results.
