I live on Green Bear Island, Maine after I moved in January and have been looking to improve my gardening skills and help residents of my island in the gardens. I was wondering if there is a such thing as pink iris that grows well is wet soil in zone 7a. We have rocky, sandy, silty, clay, and muddy soils and I can buy some so soil type isn't a problem here and I can bring the right kind in. It is waterlogged soil with muddy islands sticking out of a permanent puddle with low exposure to the salt from the nearby ocean. Any ideas yet? Thank you all. Greatly appreciate it.

Louisiana iris do better than bearded iris in those types of conditions and I found one that is a nice pink.

Louisiana Iris (Iris 'Aunt Shirley')

There are others out there too. Here's a site selling some.

I was just going to suggest a Louisiana iris, but Amanda beat me to the draw. I live in 7A, close to 6B, and my Red Velvet Elvis LA loves the damp place in which I planted it.

check with the Maine Iris Society for pinks which do well in the climate. However 7a sounds a lot better than 6a which covers most of Maine.

Thank you so much. I also have a friend in 7a over on Cedar Point Island, Ohio in Chaussee. She says I should try Louisiana as well and that they do well next to pink Oleanders and Needle Palms. Should I start a 7a tropical garden?

Thank you for responding. My cousin, Mel, lives in Ocho Rios, Jamaica and has this "reverse greenhouse" so he can grow zone 5 plants in zone 11a.

I thought most of Maine was 5b but I could be wrong. High elevations upstate are 3a! I am in a 7a microclimate on Green Bear Island. I talk to 7 people on Cedar Point Island, Ohio who are in 7b and 8a and a friend from Chaussee on CPI and they keep saying I need to start a tropical garden. I don't know if there are any bananas or palms in coastal Maine but one kid from Overlook Peninsula in Cape Cod, Massachusetts said he has Dwarf Palmetto in 6b and that they are fine.

I was surprised, too, to hear that any part of Maine was 7A. But now I'm thinking the island must be sitting out in the Gulf stream, and getting tempering effects from that.

FYI... Last time Pacific Ponds posted, one month ago, they were trolling "ask a question" with bizarre scenarios for growing plants in the South Pacific. Where they allegedly lived. I would take this one with a grain of salt.

I just checked the agricultural zone maps covering Bear Island, and it's 5b, or at the very most 6a. Definitely not 7a!

so the person either has misinformation or is pulling our leg. Black gamecock is a LA which will grow in the north, but others could be suspect.

Read Pacific Ponds' prior posts and I think you will come to the same conclusion - that the administrator here should ban PPs account entirely, not just remove his posts.

1. He can't decide where he lives.
2. He posts false information about various locations.
3. He claims to have been a horticulturist for 15 years, but also that he
a) poured 25 gallons of pool water on his palm tree.
b) killed a neighbor's palm tree by pouring bleach on it.
c) recommended that a tree that's rotting out be fitted with a treehouse, rope swing and sliding board for children. (Downright evil!)

PP is warped. I'm not just suggesting that his account be closed. I'm suggesting that his computer be identified in such fashion as to prevent him from establishing a new account. I'm certain there is a way to do that.

Hey guys, I am finally back. I am not trolling. I said I am in GREEN Bear Island in Maine. I MOVED here from Aleialei Atoll. People can move, you know. I am not as root bound as a tree. How are tree houses for kids evil???? Green Bear Island is 6a but I'm in a 7a MICROCLIMATE I was saying.

I wasn't trying to pull your legs and I'm sorry. Maine also did have an unusually warm winter. Maybe in 200 years the coast will be 8a! Who really knows.

There is no Green Bear Island no matter how loud you say it. Whistling

And posting a Google document in your profile to show it's climate still doesn't make it exist.

Neither does a YouTube video although the bear head shape with appropriately placed trees is pretty impressive.
