Hi there! This climbing rose was planted decades ago by the original owners of my house. We moved in and needed to install a fence, so the fencers removed the trellis this was growing on and cut it down to the stump you see.

This single stem grew out of it and looks like this after 2 years. It has 2 rose hips? It did grow a couple blooms last season. I just have it supported on a little post.

Is there anything I can do to help this guy along or does it just need time?

Do you know what color the blooms were before it got cut down? What color were the blooms last year? It could have reverted to the root stock. If not it's hard to say if the rose will ever fully come back but it does take time. It may take up to 5 years before it fully recovers if it's going to.

@seilmi sorry for the delay in answering your question. It finally bloomed! And smells so good! They were red before they were cut. Can it be identified?
