There comes a time when an apology no longer suffices, and for me that time has passed. Thanks to all who've shown kindness, patience and forgiveness during my many transgressions, and keep growing your beautiful gardens. If I can steal a line from the movie 'Fever Pitch' ("You can't fake baseball. You can either hit a curve ball or you can't"). It would be: "you can't fake an amazing established iris garden. You either put in the work, or the end result will be smaller and fewer blooms".

Why would you think that your pictures are sub standard? I've seen some pretty awesome photos that you've posted. I know I am not proud of some of the ones I've posted over the years. I know there are some people who are very gifted in their photography skills, and have amazing cameras and equipment who take it to a new level. I'm not one of them, but once in a while I get lucky and get an ok picture. I think the purpose of the data base is to keep an historic collection of photos of each cultivar so that in the future people can identify them and know that they existed. I know that the thumbs are nice to get and give, but sometimes when we post a picture, it's not on the page very long for people to see and respond to. I don't feel you have anything to be ashamed of. Remember that you can always post a comment with a photo if you want to clarify that it's a "full sun" picture or what ever. Lift you head up and smile, Richard, you've done good, and give that puppy a hug for me. Smiling

Hey! I really like many of your photographs. Some of them are on my computer for my personal storage. They are informative, the color and shape of the flower is visible. When I need to make a decision to buy a variety, your photos can be very useful. Here are some of your photos that give me great pleasure:

Richard, I can't recall seeing any of your photos that I thought were terrible and shouldn't be in the database. I think you're selling yourself short as to the quality of your photos.

As for which photo is most popular, don't worry about the thumbs-up feature. I've posted enough photos to have worked out that it completely depends on when you post it and how many other photos are being posted at the same time - a lot of the thumbs-up activity is based on how long it's on the homepage (i.e. in the most recent photos added to the database), as well as which thread you might have added it to (especially if you posted it to a thread first, then associated it to the plant entry in the database). In short, the thumbs-up feature is not necessarily a reliable indicator of the most popular photo!

Richard: My main use of the database pics when I am considering a purchase, is to look at the way the bloom grows for multiple Gardner's and especially those with similar climates. Having many different people posting is a big plus, I believe, and not just the gifted Photographers. . I do enjoy an extra beautiful photo too but again, that's not my main reason for reviewing the photos.

There are wonderful people on this site. But just like in the real world, sometimes you will have someone who might cross the lines in their opinions/judgement. I try to determine whether it is constructive criticism or just someone being persnickety. If persnickety, I just blow them off. They have a right to their opinion and I have a right to choose not to internalize it.

I hope you continue to hang out with the rest of us. And post your wonderful photos. Just look at Fancy Ideas photo Vallery is showing above. There is nothing sub-standard about that!!!
I think the people who grow Irises are about as special as the flower itself!

Richard, your photos are gorgeous, and none of your photos are substandard. Unless I didn't see them I think I've given all of them thumbs. I just went and gave thumbs to the ones Valeria posted above that I haven't seen before. I've been on my phone more lately and the picture bar to the right doesn't show up on the phone. Sorry I don't know what that bar is called. *Blush* same thing goes with the Site Banners that don't show up on a phone.

Sometimes my thumbs-up is given because a particular iris that I like is getting recognition.

I am agreeing with Elsa. I like to see both photos of a bloom at its best as well as its worst. That's the only way you can picture an average "look" of a given iris. So there is utility even in photos that some might regard as bad. I think it has often saved me from buying plants that to me might have ended up not having what I prefer in terms of consistent form. My garden is small enough that I am forced to be extremely careful what I put into it. I don't have the luxury of lots of room.

Only once have I ever bought an iris for which there was only one photo available. I was not real impressed with its bloom last year, but I photographed it anyway, and put my photos into the database so that people can know what it's like, even if it isn't perfect. I hope next spring's bloom is better than its maiden year bloom. I will photograph it again, and again post those photos to the database, since so far I seem to be the only one who is growing it and photographing it! Only time will tell whether I made a good choice in buying it when it was just barely introduced and quite expensive.

Hi Richard, I'm a little confused---your post doesn't refer to pictures, but everyone's response mentions pictures. Confused But I'll agree with everyone else, your pictures posted by Valeria look good to me, and as Daisy and others pointed out, it is helpful to see the flower grown by many others to see how it does in different situations and to see the range in appearance. Smiling

Richard originally mentioned substandard photos in his post, which he has now edited out. Perhaps that was not meant to be the main focus?

Thanks, Joshua.

Hang in there, Richard! Maybe it is just a matter of downsizing so that less time is spent working on the garden and more time spent enjoying it. Smiling

Someone on this forum mentioned that if a particular iris doesn't give them great joy and cause them to marvel at its beauty, it is one to get rid of. Something I may have to do soon, as I find less and less time to enjoy my garden.
