Update: I apologize for my poor typing in the subject line. {rolling my eyes}

I've been a hosta grower for many years but now I have a bit more sun on my property so I'm going to focus on growing more daylilies. Don't laugh, but I only have six named varieties now. Smiling

When thinking about planting locations, what to collect, and how to organize new purchases, I'm curious to know how some of you have done it. My initial wish list is to collect some of the species, some pre-WW II cultivars, some Stouts. I thought about building daylily beds by timeline too.

Just curious to hear what others here have done. Thank you!

Hi Judy, I don't think we've conversed before, but am glad to see you on the daylily forums! Don't feel ashamed for only having six daylilies, we were all there at one time. And the people here will remedy that real quick Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

I didn't have a plan when I started gardening, just plunked them down where ever. Now, I walk around until I find a place that is open and swear that I will have to get rid of some to make some room, lol.

But some folks do want daylilies in specific areas and I think it is commendable that they do that. I believe Ginny, @legalily, has a "prayer garden" that has daylilies that are religiously named. I am sure she would be happy to let you know all about her wonderful garden.

Decided to add a picture of my haphazard planting! This was taken last July. Some time in the mid-90's, my husband cultivated this row so I could have a wildflower bed. Then in 2004 the daylily bug hit me and it is almost all daylilies now.

I currently have diploids in one bed and the Tetraploids in another area- but hubby has decided he wants to work with spiders and unusual forms so they are getting a new bed of their own. I have a section in a protected area for the newer expensive cultivars I have coming next month and another section for the seedlings.

I use maps and labels to keep track of the cultivars but crowd any new acquisitions in if there is an empty spot. If there isn't a good empty area I dig out a little more lawn.

Thank You! Vickie nodding
I have a couple of themed gardens.

The Prayer Garden has daylilies with biblical names or something to do with faith.

The American Garden has names that honor our service people, firefighters and police.

The mini garden has all small and mini daylilies.

My memory/family garden has names for family members that have passed on and also siblings and children that are still alive.

The rest of the gardens are arranged according to height and I try to put colors together that compliment each other. I also mix early, mid and late bloomers together to extend the season.

Paul, I am so glad you mentioned maps and labels. That is very important. Which reminds me, it is a good time to do a walkabout to make sure all those garden markers didn't get heaved out of the ground over winter and to make sure my maps are up to date.

I'm loving all the ideas everyone! Vicki, what a gorgeous flower bed! And Ginny, beautiful theme gardens and great pictures. Gives me a lot of good ideas. I like how you've mixed other perennials with the daylilies. Smiling

Thank you Eagleriver. That too is a good idea, but I'm not at the dips and tets stage yet. LOL

I arrange my daylilies by color. I grow in boxes because sand doesn't work for daylilies. When I rearrange the planting, I lay out pictures of each daylily and try to make an attractive display. Usually this works.

Arlene,

"I arrange my daylilies by color." Does this mean you are arranging them by similar colors together, or complementing colors, or both ways? : ) I'm glad to hear how you grow them in boxes. I may have to do that with some of mine, too, or at least pots. May I ask what your boxes are made of?

Thank you.

Gorgeous beds Ginny. I would prefer my beds to be with out labels. It reminds me of markers in a grave yard but helps with my memory and when I have a garden guest ask the name of a DL they like. In my large beds in the back yard I am adding garden art.....pedestals, Bird Cages and obelisks painted red or yellow, benches and chairs. May add some pictures but I'll probably wait until there is some bloom.

Wherever I have a spot open in the garden ! I just label them. Now on paper as a way to organize, I have 3 lists which I always carry out to the garden w me when I work.
1. Alphabetical
2. List of which dl are in each bed/area, this list has the height recorded also
3. by color (a list of reds, list of orange ect)
