I've only been a member since August, but today it seems as if my screen is inundated by ads that I haven't seen here so far.

Yes, we are buried in ads. It's a terrific forum so I guess we have to live with it.

Supposedly if you contribute to certain aspects on the forum the ads are diminished, cannot remember how or where that info is stored, but try asking on the 'Ask A Question' forum

So many roads to take, choices to make, and laughs to share!

Add plant comments, data, and photos to the database. You'll be able to turn off the ads after you've made 100 contributions.

Thanks. Is there some reason why this suddenly started yesterday, after I've been here since August 2020? Is this a new company policy, or do they give you like a 6 month grace period to get you hooked in? LOL!

Sorry, I can't answer that question because I've never seen the ads here. Is it possible that you had an ad blocker that stopped working yesterday?

Zuzu, thanks for the comments. No, I've never downloaded or enabled an ad blocker here or anywhere else. I don't really care about static ads that much, but now the page is inundated with flashing video ads, which eat up my laptop's battery life like crazy. Based on what you said, it sounds like the site is trying to encourage people to add plant comments, data, and photos to their database. Hmmm... not a fan of that.

I had to get Chrome for my vaccine registration and that was just inundated with all types of adware. I normally use Opera and have no problem with ads at all. Maybe you should change your browser.

Thank goodness, I am not seeing the ads. I do use Ad Blocker + with Chrome as my browser. It works like a charm. Again, thank goodness! Plus it is free.

Thanks, Seil and Mustbnuts, for your comments. My browser is fine... I use Safari on a less than one year old MacBookAir, same as I've used for years on my old MacBookAir. I get these animated pop-ups on various random recipe and news sites, but this is new for this forum. I was just curious about why they suddenly appeared.

The ads should be better now. There is a thread in Site Talk devoted to the ad issue and Dave switched to a different company for ads.

Thanks so much, pepper 23 (Amanda) for the link to that discussion. At least I know that it wasn't just me who suddenly got inundated by the annoying flashing ads in the past week. We'll see if it improves, based on what "Dave" said. Honestly, I'm not a fan of the extortion of providing 100 images to a company.

Dave and his family are not charging membership fees and can't be expected to maintain this huge website with no income. The ads provide the family with an income. They aren't "extorting" images from you. The images remain yours. You're contributing them for the good of all the people using the site's database. If you don't want to contribute images, write some plant comments or contribute some data to the plant entries.

We all benefit from the contributions of our fellow members. I see nothing but good from this ad reducing practice.
